Replacing Old Dentures

Over the course of time, dentures may become loose as the shape of your mouth changes or your gums shrink slightly. This may mean you need a new set of dentures or a modification to your current set of dentures.

When to replace dentures

You should visit your dentist on a regular basis so that they can check the fit of your dentures. If they feel your dentures need modifying or you need a new set of dentures, then they will discuss this with you and explain your options. If you haven’t been to a dentist in a while you should ask yourself if you are experiencing any of the following problems:

  • Are your dentures causing pain or discomfort?
  • Are your dentures making clicking noises?
  • Are you having trouble eating?
  • Has your speech changed recently?
  • Are your dentures more than 3 years old?
  • Do your dentures look worn or misshapen?

If you have answered yes to any of the questions above, you should arrange to see your dentist as they may indicate problems with your dentures, which could contribute to painful problems in the future. Your dentist will then be able to decide whether you need new dentures or not.

New dentures

Dental technology is advancing all the time and dentures are now lighter, more natural looking and more effective than ever before. If you have had your old set of dentures for a long time, your dentist may encourage you to have new dentures. Your new dentures will be designed specifically to fit your mouth. Your dentist will create a mold of your teeth and your mouth, as you may know if you have been through the process before, and will send them to the dental laboratory where your new dentures will be manufactured by dental technicians.

Once the new dentures have been made up they will be returned to your dentist and then they can be fitted. Once the dentures have been fitted they must be well taken care of. This involves a daily cleansing routine, which will promote good oral health and keep the dentures nice and clean. You will need to visit your dentist every two years to check your dentures are working effectively and fit your gums well. If you experience any problems between appointments, you should arrange to see your dentist as quickly as possible.
